When a hunter reaches 70 and gets that epic melee weapon(s) they have 2 choices for it ( enchanting wise),
1:[Enchant 2H Weapon: Savagery]
or
2:[Enchant 2H Weapon: Major Agility]
Which to choose?
/hmmm
/think
Lets break this down and figure out which one is better and why? Shall we? To bad! it's my blog and I can type what I want!! Hey! don't you threaten me with the home button!! Hey what are you doing? NO! Please put the mouse down and step back slowly..........
For this break down I am going to use this default weapon:[Vengeful Gladiator's Waraxe]
Stats:
Vengeful Gladiator's Waraxe
Binds when picked up
Two-Hand
Axe
321 - 483 Damage
Speed 3.00(134.0 damage per second)+
62 StaminaDurability
120 / 120
Classes: Hunter
Requires Level 70
Equip: Improves hit rating by 15 (0.95% @ L70).
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 46 (2.08% @ L70).
Equip: Improves your resilience rating by 33 (0.84% @ L70).
Equip: Increases attack power by 92.
Equip: Your attacks ignore 98 of your opponent's armor.
wow those are some nice stats....
And this Default Ranged Weapon:[Wolfslayer Sniper Rifle]
Stats:
Wolfslayer Sniper Rifle
Binds when picked up
Ranged
Gun
149 - 278 Damage
Speed 2.70
(79.1 damage per second)
+15 Agility
Durability90 / 90
Requires Level 70
Equip: Increases attack power by 32.
Nice Gun and looks hot too! Now of course the stats for the axe don't really matter for my statistics since its all about ranged weapons for hunters, however the axe is what you need to enchant so it made it in by a loophole.. darn lawyers.
So you think you may want to boost the AP on it by 70 using the Savagery enchant, but what will the end result be for you? DPS wise of course.
Let's assume you have: 1400 RAP
24% Crit Chance
Simple numbers. NO buffs, speed boosts yet just plain white DPS.
Now for the formulas:
First you want to get the minimum damage:
Minimum Range = (((Minimum damage + Scope damage bonus) / Weapon Speed) + (Ranged Attack Power / 14) + Ammo DPS bonus) * Weapon Speed
Then you want the maximum:
Maximum Range = (((Maximum damage + Scope damage bonus) / Weapon Speed) + (Ranged Attack Power / 14) + Ammo DPS bonus) * Weapon Speed
so those are the formulas to determine total minimums and maximum white damage.
Now I will plug in our range weapons numbers..remember no ammo pouch or bonus ammo DPS or scope for our calculations.
Minimum Range = (((149+ 0) /2.70 ) + (1400/ 14) + 0) * 2.70 = 418.9 ( 55.18) (100) (418.9)
Maximum Range = (((278+ 0) / 2.70) + (1400/ 14) + 0) * 2.70 = 547.83
DPS formula:DPS = ((Minimum Range + Maximum Range) / 2) / Attack Speed
so now we plug our information in:
DPS = ((418.9+ 547.83) / 2) / 2.70 = 179 DPS
Now you have a base of 179DPS.!!!!
Now we put the savagery enchant on our axe and the DPS changes to:
Minimum Range = (((149+ 0) /2.70 ) + (1470/ 14) + 0) * 2.70 = 432.4
Maximum Range = (((278+ 0) / 2.70) + (1470/ 14) + 0) * 2.70 = 561.33
so now we have our min and max white damage.
But what about our over all DPS.
Well Billie and Susie I think I can help there too!
/superhero pose
DPS formula:
DPS = ((Minimum Range + Maximum Range) / 2) / Attack Speed
so now we plug our information in:
DPS = ((432.4+ 561.33) / 2) / 2.70 = 184 DPS
Remember no talents involved (yet).
The end result for white DPS with no buffs, talents, or scopes is:
without: 179DPs
with Savagery Enchant: 184DPS
giving you a whopping 5 DPS... ooo aaaahhh.....
So now its the Agility formulas time:
First the basic agility stats conversions......for level 70's
1 Agility = 1 Attack Power
14 Ranged Attack Power = 1 DPS
1 Agility = 0.552 Critical Strike Rating
22.08 Critical Strike Rating = +1% Critical Hit
40 Agility = +1% Critical Hit
35 agility enchant to your main hand weapon.
Gives you:
35 RAP
2.4DPS
19.32 Crit strike rating
.90% Crit chance
just by looking at this your DPS will be better from Savagery Enchant, however lets look deeper into your Favorite Doc's eyes. ( quit staring its not polite.):
You travel to Doc. BOOM and want to test out your DPS.
You fire 100 shots with your DPS being 179 ( previous calculation)
100 * 179 = 17900 Damage average no crit 100 shots fired all hit.
now you can add 5 damage per shot from your savagery enchant:
100*5=500+17900=18400 total damage
now with the agility enchant:
100*179=17900 damage
2.4 damage to your total from the 35 agility enchant :
2.4*100+17900=18140 damage
the difference of 18400-18140= 260 total damage
Now lets look at crit being added.
base crit during no enchant shot rotation will be lets say 24% ( its just a random number for this)
A critical strike is usually double to almost double your normal damage shot.
So we fire off 100 shots and 24 critically hit(hypothetically).
(66(normal shots) *179) + (24*(179*2) = 20406 Damage
Nice increase of 2506 damage.
Now with savagery and crit
(66*184)+(24*(184*2) = 20976
a difference of 570 damage.
now the same formula with the agility enchant except 1 extra crit from the crit boost.
(65*181.4) + (25*(181.4*2) = 20789 total damage
again the savagery finishes first.
But the big factors in choosing which one is yes savagery has better over all damage with sustained constant white damage, but Agility will give you a better chance to crit and more often. Personally I would like to crit more since most hunters will use a steady auto macro and hopefully the steady shot crits for even more damage. Also if multishot or arcane shot crit that is a nice boost as well in damage. I will go into more formulas with shot rotation and other things at a later date, however in closing this is hypothetical base numbers, however the formula is a real formula for wow, so enjoy it.
If anyone needs any formulas for anything please let me know.

Hmm interesting. You've actually almost talked me into getting savagery for my axe instead of mu +35 I have on there now.
